19APRIL2010 - Judith Landing to Bullwhacker Creek - 34 Miles. Today I saw Bighorn Sheep, Mule Deer, Beaver, Bald Eagles, Pelicans, Ducks and Geese. I also saw a tick and this reminds me that I need to get some repellant. Expecting cooler weather I had projected to buy some repellant in Wolf Point ... I may encounter a lot of ticks before that ... Ugghhh! Today was warm and calm for 32 miles, then dark (and small) clouds gathered and a head wind slowed me down while also convincing me to stop at this BLM Campground.
Today I saw zero people once I pushed away from the Judith Landing ... my most solitudinous day so far. It is amazing how loud the birds sound in such solitude.
Today's float was full of rapids. Though no problem for a canoe, riverboats would have had great difficulty with some of them due to the large rocks. While few in number, they are seriously sized and not easy to see.
All the cottonwoods have the greenish fuzzy spring look now.
I just picked a second tick off my leg. I've decided to leave my canoe at the Fred Robinson Bridge and hitchhike to Malta or Grass Range for some repellant. While there I will resupply with peanut butter and tuna. I find peanut butter to be the ultimate river trip snack food and I am getting low.
