21APRIL2011 @ Miles City, MT - Awakening to a bright sunny day, I coffeed, blogged yesterday and motored away into the sun. At Terry I visited the county museum and an adjacent Cameron (Evelyn?) photographic display/annex. Mrs. Cameron lived at three different Terry area ranches 100 years back. She carried her tripod and camera everywhere; between she and Charlie Russell the disappearing west was well documented. Terry is probably one of the better photographed small towns in America, historically speaking. Also in Terry is the Grandey School, built in 1916. The basketball court in the basement is 40 feet by 40 feet and was - so the museum director tells me - built for basketball. When I first saw it in 1985 I was certain it was a boxing and calisthenics gym that was adapted for basketball. Knowing that it was built for basketball places it high on the "MUST SEE" list for all real basketball fans.

Leaving Terry I was aware that Rush Limbaugh had not altered the air in my cab all day. By the time I got close to Sidney that had changed, but for 50 or so miles in the Terry-Glendive area I was apparently in a Rush Free zone. I would have never guessed that that was possible.

At almost every crossing of the Yellowstone River the banks were strewn with innumerable ice chunks. The Yellowstone flows NE and is given to frozen downstream areas when the headwaters are thawing ... this causes ice jams that spill onto the banks. Quite a sight.

I arrived at the Tobacco Gardens Resort at about 1800 and found it closed for Easter. Well, not knowing my precise arrival date I had not made a reservation. Knowing it to be a year-round resort I expected no closing. But ... the cabins are unlocked and electrified. The bathroom is ounlocked and well heated. Internet access is unsecured and at 5-bar strength. Basically only the restaurant is closed. So, peanut butter and pears are my supper. Awesome sunset from the front porch of my cabin.
