22MAY2011 near Ft. Yates, ND - No rain fell last night and I was up and on the river before sunrise. What wind there was was from the north ... I immediately crossed over to the east bank.

By about 1000 I made it to the State Line Resort and found a deserted facility with an open gate and mowed grass. Doors were unlocked and I saw no new supplies ... will they open this season? Will someone come by and lock things up? Well, no sandwich there, so I pushed off and after a mile, passed into South Dakota. There is no "Welcome to South Dakota" sign nor even a noticeable fence line to signal that North Dakota is finally behind me.

Clearing the "Pillars of Hades" I immediately pulled in at a sheltered bay and climbed a hill to survey the situation. Several motor boats were heading toward Pollock; is there a small craft warning out? Overhead the row of dark clouds passed and the wind diminished. Whitecaps fairly quickly disappeared and - except for the concern about a small craft warning - it looked like a good time to go across Spring creek, about two miles. I pushed opff and hailed a passing boat. They assured me that the weather would hold - folks were returning to Pollock because they had made their daily fishing limit. All right, it's always good to hear about good fishing.

More later
