6JUNE2011 @ Pierre, SD - Up at 0400 ... good on the water but not beneficial here, so back to bed it is. Up again at 0700 and a good French Toast breakfast. At 0945 I was five miles out standing by the canoe; at noon I was in the Governor's office delivering the letter from Bryan Schweitzer. As I portaged, several folks stopped to wish me well or offer assistance. Included was a highway patrolman, the same one who stopped yesterday (His dog is "Cas"). He agreed that it was wise to stay off the river at least into Pierre, but that I could begin the next leg at Pierre and in the canoe. He explained that at full pool the next impoundment - Lake Sharp - extends all the way to Pierre, so essentially there is no river to have concern over. Late in the day the director of the South Dakota Game and Fish visited. He told to portage on for two more miles to the Farm Island State Park, roll past the barricades and put in at the boat ramp there. He said this would put me past all the logs and trees that are closer to Pierre. That portage will therefore be tomorrow's distance - I plan to paddle on the next day, Wednesday. The Capitol is near river mile 1064; today I portaged 5 miles. It is hot and humid, both in the 90s ... good day to go swim or stay indoors.
