21APRIL2012 near Marty, SD - Yes, it rained again last night but datylight showed clear and warm. The NW wind predicted for today arrived about 30 minutes after I got in the water. I continue to drift, luxuriating in the happiness that I need not paddle. The wind plus the current means that my progress is significant.
There are four whitetail deer approaching the water's edge.
About 1100 the wind speed increased and pushed me ashore near mile 865, just a bit downstream from the Sunshine Bottoms Boat Ramp. For several hours I sat on the porch of the first house waiting for the wind to subside, lying down for a while and sleeping for easily an hour. The houses and out buildings in this row were all inundated last year; this one about 12 inches. Walking the lane toward the southeast it is obvious that most buildings experienced water far deeper than 12 inches. One fairly new house that was built slab-on-grade showed a mud line higher than four feet. Houses or trailers set on piers were also damaged, even those with a floor line above the high water mark. Evidently the particle board and other composite materials used in the construction of these mobile or modular homes absorbs water from a wet underspace and will display the musty odor/feel forever. Ninety days of subfloor flooding was a long period for that moisture to permeate these homes.
Eventually I took a stroll down the lane looking for an internet hot zone. Though finding none, I smelled a fire around which were five young men. Classmates at an area high school, these thirty-somethings gather each year to hunt turkeys and be friends. They welcomed me into their circle and - it being late in the day and with the wind showing no sign of diminishing - suggested that I occupy one of the beds in the house that night. This I happily accepted. The house is owned by Travis Barney, a gentleman I am happy to have met. After a steak supper and some Russian TV News (it's true) I was off to bed.
Today I travelled from river mile 873 to river mile 865 a distance of 8 river miles.
