25MAY2012 @ Cape Girardeau, MO - Today I travelled nowhere.  Neumeyer's Bed and Breakfast is too comfortable to leave, so I stayed an extra day ... and you should come here and do the same.
The Corps of Discovery came through Cape Girardeau on their journey west.  On the return they disbanded (civilians anyway) at St. Louis.  I am therefore still retracing Lewis and Clark ... when I depart from Cairo I will leave their route.
I did a short walk to the Post Office and passed a memorial for Confederate Soldiers located on the county courthouse lawn.  Now Helena, Montana has a memorial for the Confederacy at Hill Park, not on the courthouse grounds.  That such a memorial could be located on any courthouse lawn in any state that stayed in the union during the war is strange, even amazing.  Radio personality Rush Limbaugh was born and raised in Cape Girardeau.  Is it not possible that Mr. Limbaugh's consideration that his hate/misinformation/"part of the story" dissemination supports our country is caused at least in some part by his birth county's official commemoration of support for the Civil War's losing side?
I am at river mile 52.  I will eschew the breakfast part of the Bed and Breakfast tomorrow and depart early.  If I average 35 miles per day I will be in Helena (ARK) on June 4th.
