31MAY2012 near Blytheville, AR - Today I paddled nowhere. Blytheville is in a tornado watch zone and it seems stupid to sugest that I could go out in that situation.
Dad was briefly stationed here in WW2. Perhaps I will be able to go to the base and see some of his pictures ... or not. Meanwhile if any of you are near the Super 8 motel in Blytheville, please stop by ... room 312.
At Walmart I found some replacement shorts then went over for some fried chicken. A gentleman was arranging a display of peaches and he and I engaged in conversation. I explained how I had picked an orchard once in a ten day effort while in college in South Carolina. He immediately responded that the college must be Clemson. There are lots of peach trees in South Carolina and students other than Clemson students pick ... so "Why" I asked him did he immediately mention Clemson. His response made my day ... "You speak with proper grammer and you clearly take care of yourself." Whew - let me find a seat! Then he upped the ante by describing a conversation with a USC grad. I can not make this stuff up ... it was fascinating.
It is 147 miles to Helena, Arkansas. It is 75 miles to Memphis, so even with an early start and a favorable wind I will not arrive in Memphis Friday night. Unless something unforeseen happens I expect to arrive in Helena on Sunday at mid-afternoon.

today I hit 211.6 lbs, lowest since Oct 2011, and if I get to 209 I will be lowest in two full years............I'm paddlin' as fast as I can!
ReplyDeleteI once had a waitress in MS say she knew I wasn't a local because I was nice and I tipped!
ReplyDeleteHi there you in Room 321 - do you have a view?
ReplyDeleteSorry I won't be able to greet you with a Corona in Helena2. You are still traveling too fast for me. When you first started this trip, I waited at the Iron Bridge with 6 cold Coronas until I realized that you must have passed under the bridge before I arrived that morning. I even drove up to Holter Dam campground to make sure you made it around the dam and weren't broke down. We'll still have that Corona when you make it back to Helena1. You are coming back to Helena1 and not planning to stay in Helena2 for the summer.
The 1st Wednesday in July is July 4th I believe. It's a date!!
