7MAY2012 near Langdon, MO - At 0700 I was getting across the muddy cornfield on my way back to the river.  Lots of mud on my shoes, no little corns sprouts.  The rain was so extensive that I bailed 100 cups before the cup quantity seemed to lessen.  By river mile 528 the canoe was bailed, my gear straightened out and the day's paddle began in earnest.  In 7 hours I had gone 33 miles, pulling in at Rulo for a late lunch.  Rulo is getting a serious share of federal stimulous money.  The new bridge across the Missouri River has another year to go ... it looks good.  Fresh made pie at Wild Bills is also stimulating ... the same can be said for Billie who served me  - and will be happy to see you too.
Having a desire to see Nebraska behind me I paddled on, not stopping until arriving at White Cloud, Kansas.  Wolf River told me about the history of White Cloud and I then went to a town council meeting.  Discussions ensued about moving some part of the grain elevator business, parts that had flood damage last year.  Further discuassions about the water system brought comments from the Kansas Rural water Associationj, the system operator, the grant writer the professional engineer and most of the council.  The matter is complicated by a proposal to combine 5 small town systems into one large rural system ... something that may actually never occur.  I offerred nothing, but complimented the operator as I left.  The operator asked the right questions and provided good sense responses.  Back at the canoe the nearest house volunteered his yard for my bed.  Dark seemed to gather quickly yet I was able to get situated and keep my head covered from mosquitoes ... and sleep happened again.  It did not rain all night.
Today I paddled from river mile 531 to river mile 488, a total of 43 miles.  Animals seen today are whitetail deer, eagles, herons, ducks, turkeys and bullfrogs.
