13APRIL2010 near Black Eagle, MT - Since a winter storm was bearing down, we opted to cache my gear at the Widow Coulee Fishing Access site early. We were not certain if accumulated snow would allow an exit from such a steep incline either later in the day or tomorrow. By 0830 this was done and I was on my way to the Evans Ranch. There I was again greeted by Shep; I began making my way east at about 0930. By 1130 I had the canoe at the Morony dam and was on my way back to the Hotel. Doing these four miles in the morning was a good idea as snow began falling in earnest at about noon. By 3:30PM snow was accumulating on the grass and vehicles though still not on the streets. It will possibly be necessary to walk down the final mile to Morony dam tomorrow. The plan for tomorrow is to start late - about 11AM perhaps - and canoe the seven miles to Widow Coulee. There I will either set up for the night or put my gear in and proceed another 5 miles downriver and set up camp. The latter is anticipated as doing so will put me within an easy day float to Fort Benton, where I can hotel for Thursday night. I am looking forward to getting back on the river. While slowing down for a portage is understood, doing so makes me edgy. It is appreciated that weather made much of these past several days a period when little downriver progress would have been made ... and portaging was a good activity for those days.

  1. Talked with Filomena this afternoon and learned that you had passed around Morony Dam and are on your way to Ft. Benton or maybe a campsite before Ft. Benton. Glad that you weren't thrown off your stride by this spring weather. Safe passage to you. Lukenbill
