22April2010 - I awoke well rested and eager and was underway only minutes after the full sun broke clear of the pine ridge. Expecting stiff SE winds I wanted to get as many miles as possible behind me before the wind picked up. Indeed after about ten miles some wind began and it was from the east and it did slow me down but only thrice did I see whitecaps. By midafternoon I had paddled 30 miles and chose to stop. The location of my camp would appear on basically all maps to be approximately 5 miles onto Fort Peck Lake. Reality, however, is that I camped along a moving river, not a lakeside.
During the day I saw Turtles, Cranes, Ducks and Geese. Generally sunny and warm, as I pen this late in the day there are small cloud puffs everywhere. Nothing looks like the rain that is supposedly coming.
In packing the canoe this morning I tried to put more of the heavy items closer to the bow and things were better balanced ... paddling into the wind was a bit easier. Tonight I am dining on tuna, cheese and the last of Helena's Thriftway Potato Chips ... yummm!
