The nine miles from Belgrade to Bozeman was covered in about three hours from 1400 to 1700. As I arrived Joe M. was leaving for home. We agreed to meet for breakfast at 0730 ... I went for Chinese and Joe went for family. While dining I developed chills and shakes, so I quickly drove back to Joe's cabin and bedded down, continuing to shake. About 2300 I awakened feeling thirsty but no longer cold. As I write this I am drinking a tea/lemonade mixture and wondering about those chills.
Today I saw 4 or 5 garter snakes wiggling around together. It is amazingly warm and seeing snakes on April 4th underscores just how warm it is. I continue to see road killed deer ... lots of road killed deer.
Early today Oliver Y. told me that my 3-year old laptop, while operating, would not be reliable for this year's trip. I therefore bought a new one before leaving Helena. It is slightly larger yet not noticeably heavier. Being more up-to-date already feels better.
Today I learned that Sakakawea was part of Clark's 1806 trip. That means her husband, Toussaint Charbonneau, and child, Baptiste, were also along. It was not a large group - only about 11 total - so I am guessing no more than 4 canoes were fashioned for the trip down the Yellowstone.
